The Woolmers rose
In 2017 we decided to go visit Woolmers, an Historic Site which had a rose garden with the Southern Hemisphere rose collection! LABELLED!!!
We were impressed, especially by the Old Fashioned heritage roses, but what caught our eye that day was a hedge of modern deep pink roses with the healthiest dark foliage of any in the garden. We found the name and determined to buy one. But all enquiries failed. No rose breeder had heard of it. So a call to Woolmers found us surprised and delighted to be given a cutting ready for planting out. Carefully a hole was dug and the wee rose planted with great excitement. The morning showed Great Destruction as we/I had failed to guard our tiny plant against marauding possums and wallabies. I remember asking God for forgiveness for my shortsightedness. We knew we could not ask for another cutting! But to our joy the little remnant grew and became the first of many. Nine roses grown and planted each year, now forming a long informal hedge in honour of Pamela Hutchins the first Rosarian of Woolmers.
So the "Pamela Hutchins" rose has continued to flourish in this garden to this day.
