Sweet peas...

Well, it's St. Patrick's Day, 17 March,so ...as all good gardeners understand perfectly well, it's time to plant sweet peas! I once scattered them throughout the garden on the farm at Boggabri in NSW, and they grew like ground covers...all through, scrambling up..a bit haphazard. The first years at Beauty Point I grew them up a trellis, but on the other side were white Japanese anemones...after a couple of years they encroached and soon there was NO ROOM for sweet peas.; and the Japanese anemones WERE delightful. So I planted the sweet peas in a new place. No sooner were they up and flourishing, when the blackbirds and various four legged evening predators ATE THEM EVERYONE...oh Dear. Last year's brilliant idea was to grow them in pots on the deck...8 inch pots with three seeds in each. But the pots soon ran out of nutrients..not a success ..although there WERE flowers... but this year odd seedlings are springing up in the other pots on the deck !!! So, this year's trial is to plant them in the vegie patch, against the fence, with trellissing to guard them from marauding wolves...(Happi Lappi). We shall see. I always try to plant Mr Hammet's sweet peas, as he went back to the original plants in order to breed the deep fragrance back into his sweet peas!!  Oh the joys of gardening...
